Tottenham Hotspur supporters are eagerly anticipating the first significant signing of the Thomas Frank era, but thus far, the early indications haven’t been encouraging.
Frank made a name for himself with standout players at Brentford, particularly Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard. While both were linked with Tottenham upon his arrival, Mbeumo is now reportedly heading to Manchester United, with Norgaard set to join Arsenal.
Currently, Eberechi Eze appears to be the most thrilling potential acquisition on the horizon (check out our analysis on how he could integrate into Spurs). However, there’s increasing apprehension that Arsenal may also be a serious contender for his signature.
This situation necessitates a quicker response from Spurs.
Several targets have eluded them
The club seems to be tranquil about the unfolding events, but fans are left with a disconcerting sense that the ambition they crave isn’t manifesting—even after they lifted the Europa League trophy, ending a lengthy wait for silverware.
Other intriguing targets have already slipped through their fingers. The highly regarded Rooney Bardghji chose Barcelona, while Rayan Cherki, who seemed initially keen, opted for a better deal with Manchester City.
In midfield, Angel Gomes has signed for Marseille after turning down Tottenham’s interest, and Johnny Cardoso, who was on their radar, has committed to Atletico Madrid. Danish midfielder Victor Froholdt from FC Copenhagen has been mentioned in connection with Tottenham, but Eintracht Frankfurt appears to be taking the lead in that race.
While Spurs are officially claiming a mere ‘tentative’ interest in Mbeumo and Norgaard, their search for a wide attacker and a holding midfielder makes the failure to secure either player quite conspicuous.
Privately, sources close to the club admit the initial impressions aren’t great, yet there remains a belief that Tottenham will engage in significant business.
At this juncture, all eyes are on Eze—who represents the clearest opportunity for a headline-grabbing signing. It’s crucial for the club to act decisively or risk missing out on yet another target.
Spurs have also explored alternative attacking options, including Mbeumo and Bournemouth’s £65 million-rated Antoine Semenyo, but Eze is viewed as the most economical choice among the trio.
What’s the latest with Eze?
The Crystal Palace star possesses a release clause in his deal set at £60 million, payable in three instalments of £20 million, accompanied by an additional £8 million in potential bonuses. The clause is active, and it’s understood that the player is willing to consider offers.
Eze’s combination of flair, physicality, and productivity makes him one of the most coveted players on the transfer market this summer. There have been indications he would be amenable to a transfer to Spurs, but the club must make a move soon, as he is also contemplating a potential switch to Arsenal.

The Gunners are eyeing him as a prime alternative to Rodrygo (read more about their pursuit here), while it’s reported that Newcastle, Manchester City, and Chelsea are also monitoring Eze’s situation.
Tottenham will soon gauge their chances of securing his signature, though interestingly, they continue to explore other options should this one fall through.
Sources indicate that Mohammed Kudus is one of the players they’re eyeing as he seeks to depart West Ham United. Additionally, Xavi Simons of RB Leipzig has been on their radar, along with Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma and Joao Pedro as attacking targets.
Tottenham did confirm a signing this week, with Japanese defender Kota Takai arriving from Kawasaki Frontale in a £5 million deal. However, this move, while positive, does little to elevate the expectations to a level supporters desire.
A player like Eze—or even Kudus or Simons—would symbolise a new chapter under Frank. The pressing question remains whether Spurs can seal the deal or find themselves missing out yet again.
