The lead-up to the Waratahs’ inaugural Super Rugby clash against the Highlanders was filled with excitement for fans, analysts, players, and coaches.
The dawn of a new chapter under coach Dan McKellar sparked considerable interest, especially with a slew of signings from the now-defunct Rebels, including notable additions such as Andrew Kellaway and Taniela Tupou.
However, the standout storyline was undoubtedly Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, the $1.6 million player.
Suaalii delivered a compelling 66-minute display for the home crowd at Allianz Stadium, showcasing flashes of brilliance alongside a few evident errors.

After the match, the marquee signing acknowledged that the intensity in Super Rugby was significantly higher than during his impressive Wallabies debut in London.
Former Wallaby Matt Burke expressed confidence in the performance of the ex-Roosters back, saying, “He exceeded expectations going into the game. Having played his first Wallabies match in England, he did exceptionally well. His offloading was brilliant, and at fullback, it was essential for him to find time with the ball.” Burke continued on Stan Sport’s Between Two Posts, “His kicking options to start were solid, and his aerial skills were simply outstanding. Moving forward, he can easily be shifted to 13 or wing, capitalising on cross-field kicks and ensuring proactive kicking.”
“When he received the ball, he displayed good footwork and carried strongly. I was pleased with his involvement from the 15 position.”
While Suaalii was undoubtedly the centre of attention, it was teammate Siosifa Amone who ultimately stole the spotlight with two late tries.
Morgan Turinui believes that Suaalii’s presence will allow his teammates to prosper. “The more he plays, the better the Waratahs will manipulate opposition defence as they integrate him into their strategy,” he said.
“He will serve as a significant decoy behind players like (Max) Jorgensen and Kellaway. His positioning on the right wing will force defenders to account for him on cross kicks, creating space across the field.”
“His impact on the game will be immense—not only with the ball but also by the way he can be employed throughout the field.”
