For Bulldogs supporters curious about Samuel Hughes’ absence this season, Phil Gould has shed light on the mystery surrounding the prop’s situation.
Initially nominated to feature in the season opener against the Dragons, the 24-year-old was unexpectedly ruled out late in the week, leading many to believe he would return shortly.
Tragically for the team, Hughes has been sidelined ever since due to an ankle injury, and his anticipated return date was shrouded in uncertainty—until now.
Speaking on Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles With Gus, the club’s general manager of football clarified the reasons why Hughes has yet to represent Canterbury in 2025 and when supporters might see him back in the blue and white colours.

“Sam Hughes has had a challenging time—he rolled his ankle slightly in the second trial of the year and was thought to be a possibility for round one,” Gould explained.
“In fact, he trained well leading up to round one but was ruled out during the session due to still hobbling a bit, although it was believed that an extra week would do the trick.
“When they re-X-rayed it, they realised it was far more serious than initially thought, necessitating surgery for a syndesmosis injury.

“He has encountered a few setbacks during his recovery process, which is common.
“The expectation was one or two weeks, but now it’s looking like he could return in round 12.
“At the moment, he isn’t ready to take the field, but he would certainly provide a boost, especially with several middle players unavailable for the Bulldogs.”
Last year, Hughes was a standout for the Belmore side, averaging 83 run metres and 21 tackles per match while playing in the front row.
As noted by the general manager, the Bulldogs will be missing several forwards in Magic Round, with Sitili Tupouniua and Josh Curran both suspended.
