Udinese’s standout goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, is determined to secure a significant role in the Nigeria national team, inspired by his exceptional performances in Serie A.
The 25-year-old has experienced a revival in Italy, earning acclaim for his impressive displays under coach Kosta Runjaic with the White and Blacks during the ongoing 2024-25 season.
Having faced a period with limited opportunities for the Super Eagles, the skilled former Watford player is keen to demonstrate his abilities and contest for a regular spot, even with Stanley Nwabali firmly establishing himself as the first-choice goalkeeper.
Unless there are any last-minute fitness concerns, Okoye is poised to take his place in goal for Nigeria during Friday’s international friendly against Russia at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.
Okoye Embraces Nwabali’s Competition
Born in Düsseldorf to a Nigerian father and German mother, Okoye debuted for the Super Eagles in a match against Brazil in 2019, thus ending speculation about a potential allegiance to the German national team.
Despite not having many chances with Nigeria lately, he remains undeterred and welcomes the increased competition for the Super Eagles’ number one position, especially with Stanley Nwabali’s notable performances in goal.
“Obviously, we recognise what Nwabali has contributed to our nation. He’s an exceptional goalkeeper and thoroughly deserves his position, particularly as I haven’t yet reached my potential with the Super Eagles,” Okoye expressed.
“I regret that I haven’t showcased my true quality in the national team as of yet. I aspire to achieve the same level of success for Nigeria as I have with my club, as there’s nothing more significant than defending the goal for your country, especially one as remarkable as Nigeria.”
“It’s crucial to be prepared for any opportunities that may arise, even though Nwabali’s current performances warrant his starting position.”
Udinese Star Refutes Nigeria Snub Allegations
Okoye has firmly denied allegations that he once turned his back on Nigeria, asserting that representing his country remains a profound source of pride and motivation.
Following significant criticism from some supporters and media after his omission from Nigeria’s squad for the 2023 AFCON, speculation erupted suggesting he had distanced himself from the national team.
However, the Super Eagles’ keeper has now set the record straight: “That claim is untrue. I did not withdraw; I simply wasn’t selected.”
“Whenever I receive a call-up, I always accept without hesitation. Even on days when my heart isn’t completely in it, saying no is simply not an option for me.”
“If Nigeria calls me up, I’m there, no questions asked.”
When questioned about the pressure of representing Nigeria, managing fan expectations, and dealing with criticism on tougher days, he remarked:
“Whether in club football or internationals, it’s all part of the sport, and it’s important to acknowledge that.”
“The love I feel from Nigerian fans is immense, and I truly appreciate their support, whether the results are favourable or not. It’s just brilliant.”
“With so many Nigerians around the globe, it’s an incredible privilege to represent this national team. I feel profoundly honoured and proud.”
“There’s another aspect to consider during challenging times—the pressure and the online discussions that follow.”
“But we must empathise with the fans, as football is a significant part of their lives too, much like it is for us players. We want to give something back to them.”
“We must perform; my goal is to perform, and in football, sometimes you cannot escape the scrutiny, especially in today’s social media environment.”
“Even if I try to ignore negative comments, they can sometimes penetrate. Yet, as I’ve said, that’s part of the game. There are many kind and supportive people out there, so I must accept both the positives and the negatives.”
