Former Wallabies player Morgan Turinui asserts that the main focus should remain on Super Rugby Pacific rather than the discussion surrounding the Wallabies flyhalf position, as Queensland Reds talent Tom Lynagh continues to stake his claim.
Lynagh, the son of former Wallaby Michael, was instrumental in the Reds’ victory over the Highlanders in New Zealand, with his team now sitting third on the ladder.
As all four Australian clubs occupy positions from third to sixth, anticipation is growing about who outgoing Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt might select for the upcoming Test against Fiji in July, prior to the Lions tour.
With three Test caps under his belt, Lynagh is intensifying the competition with incumbent Noah Lolesio for the Wallabies’ squad, and former Reds player James Horwill believes he has a strong chance.

“I definitely think he should be in the discussion for the Wallabies No. 10 jersey,” he stated on Stan Sport’s Between Two Posts.
“… I don’t see why that’s not the case.”
Horwill went on to say that Lynagh’s performance in leading the team to victory against the Highlanders would certainly catch Schmidt’s attention.
“He took charge of a team that was struggling and led them to win away in New Zealand. The selectors will be keen to see how he performs when the Reds are firing on all cylinders, but during that match, he showed he could navigate through tough situations,” he commented.
Nonetheless, Turinui feels that this discussion should be set aside for now, given the intense competition of the Super Rugby Pacific season.
“With the Wallabies set to face Fiji, followed by the Lions series, who do you foresee as the best fit to don the No. 10 jersey in a successful campaign? It’s premature to have this conversation,” he remarked.
“(Ben) Donaldson has been playing well, but the Force has had their struggles. Lynagh has impressed, while Noah remains the one to beat.”
“Let’s postpone that discussion… right now, Super Rugby Pacific is thriving, and that’s the narrative we should focus on.
“For Lynagh, Lolesio, Donaldson, and even (Lawson) Creighton’s, (Tane) Edmed, and (Jack) Debreczeni, the goal should be to secure a Super Rugby title before we turn our attention to the Wallabies.”
