Gold Coast midfielder Matt Rowell is proving to be one of the most intriguing out-of-contract players in the AFL, with strong links to Collingwood intensifying.
The Suns appear poised to secure their inaugural finals appearance, with the 23-year-old playing a pivotal role in their midfield.
In the past, several emerging talents have opted to chase the draw of larger, rival clubs, and losing the former number one draft pick would be a significant setback for Gold Coast.
Essendon legend James Hird opines that it would be tough for Rowell to resist a substantial offer from the Magpies should he remain at Gold Coast.

When Hird was asked whether he would ‘buy’, ‘hold’, or ‘sell’ Rowell re-signing with the Suns, he suggested that a departure seems likely.
“The Collingwood rumour is certainly gaining momentum,” Hird remarked on Nine’s Eddie and Jimmy podcast.
“If you’re Matt Rowell, would you prefer to play for Gold Coast or Collingwood? He’s a Melbourne native. I remember watching him play when he was just 12 years old.”
“As for the prospect of him remaining at the Suns? I’m going to sell that idea.”
Brownlow Medallist Jimmy Bartel suggested that Gold Coast may put forth a short-term deal for Rowell, aimed at extending his time with the club until he reaches free agency if they can’t secure a longer agreement.
“I could see the Suns offering him a two-year deal, proposing, ‘Why don’t you give this group a real chance? Let’s see if we can achieve some finals success, and then we will revisit your situation later,'” Bartel stated.
“I think Gold Coast will emphasise ‘we’ll give you options’; they are keen for him to stay.”
A two-year contract would lead Rowell up to free agency.
Following their bye week, the Suns had hoped that the talented midfielder would have made a decision regarding his future.
They are gearing up for a crucial match against GWS on Sunday afternoon, a significant encounter for both teams eyeing the top eight.
