Nigeria international Igoh Ogbu is optimistic about Slavia Prague’s chances in next season’s Champions League, expressing confidence that they can compete effectively against Europe’s elite clubs.
With their triumph in the Czech First League last season, the Red and Whites secured their place in the league phase of the prestigious competition, joining renowned teams like the current champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Last season, Slavia’s Champions League campaign ended in disappointment after a play-off round defeat to Lille, followed by a challenging Europa League season that saw them eliminated in the group stage.
However, the centre-back is filled with confidence, believing that Slavia Prague will make a notable impact when the 2025/26 season begins later this year.
“Football is very much about moments. I don’t think any player is bigger than the game itself. If you want to, you can develop into a better footballer by working hard,” he stated.
“I absolutely believe that we can hold our own against the top teams in Europe, and that’s what we are eagerly anticipating.”

Ogbu on his development at Slavia
After a standout period with Norwegian club Lillestrom, the former Nigeria U20 talent joined Slavia Prague in January 2023, signing a three-year contract with the Czech outfit.
Despite stiff competition at the Fortuna Arena, Ogbu has established himself as a key player under Jindrich Trpisovsky. Reflecting on his 2024/25 season, the Nigerian defender emphasised his personal growth and his desire for silverware.
“My primary aim at Slavia Prague was to contribute to the team’s success in winning a trophy, and I am proud to have achieved that,” he stated.
“I am genuinely happy and proud of this achievement. I believe I had a solid season, putting in significant effort to elevate my game.”
“It has not only been about growing as a player but evolving into a strong competitor on the pitch. This has marked an important progression in my career.”
Ogbu is one of seven African players in Slavia Prague’s squad, alongside compatriot David Moses, Timothy Ouma from Kenya, Cameroon’s Simion Michez, Liberia’s Divine Teah, and Senegalese players Youssoupha Sanyang and El Hadji Malick Diouf.
He attributes much of his development to his manager, commending his positive impact both on and off the field.
The former NPFL standout noted: “Jindrich is a fantastic coach. He is a specialist in defence, and he has truly assisted my growth—not only on the field but also in terms of mindset and personal development.”
“He genuinely cares for the team, ensuring we are supported in all aspects of our lives. His door is always open, encouraging us to approach him with any concerns.”
“This kind of backing has significantly boosted my confidence and driven me to improve as a player.”
What lies ahead for Ogbu?
Owing to his impressive displays for Slavia Prague, Ogbu has garnered considerable attention. However, the Nigerian defender is keen to clarify the speculation surrounding his future.
“I have recently signed a new contract with Slavia Prague that runs until 2027,” he confirmed.
“For me, the future is about now, and it has already started. My focus is completely on performing well in the league and the Champions League. Once that’s done, we’ll see what lies ahead.”
On the international front, Ogbu has donned the Nigeria jersey at various levels, representing the U20 squad in both the 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and the FIFA U-20 World Cup, where he made seven appearances during the Flying Eagles’ campaign in Poland.
He made his senior international debut while representing the Super Eagles in their successful 2025 Unity Cup campaign in London, appearing in a 1-1 draw against Russia in Moscow, where he came on as a substitute for Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
