A pair of bright pink boots will soon serve more than just a purpose for Connor Watson’s grandparents in Dubbo as they prepare to shift their seats into the stands for the State of Origin decider.
This Wednesday, Watson will don his NSW Blues jersey for Game Three, marking his debut at an Origin match in Sydney, with a packed crowd of 80,000 expected at the sold-out Accor Stadium.
Amongst the sea of fans, there are two familiar faces the 29-year-old will be searching for.
Born in Dubbo and moving to the Central Coast at the tender age of five, Watson dedicated himself to rugby league from an early age.
From making his debut with the Roosters to a four-year chapter in Newcastle before returning to the Tricolours, his grandparents have been steadfast supporters – although they have yet to attend one of his Origin matches.
“My nan and pop haven’t had the chance to see an Origin game live because they can’t fly,” Watson shared on Nine’s Freddy and the Eighth.

“I played my first match in Melbourne, then I was at Suncorp in Brisbane, followed by Perth. Now, they are travelling down from Dubbo, which is really special.
“Having them there to watch it live, along with all my friends, family, and 80,000 passionate Blues fans, will be an incredible experience.”

The colour of a player’s boots often serves as a distinctive marker for viewers, and in recent seasons, Watson has consistently chosen vibrant pink.
This choice, though, was inspired by his grandmother’s request.
“A few years back, my nan used to tease me, saying, ‘I can’t tell which player you are because I can’t see what colour boots you’re wearing,'” he recalled during an interview with 9News on Sunday.

“In wider shots, it’s difficult to spot me, so she asked, ‘Can you wear some brightly coloured boots for me?’
“She absolutely loves it because now she can track my movements on the field with the vibrant pink boots.”
The Roosters hooker has appeared in four Origin games, yet the pride he feels wearing the NSW jersey remains unchanged.
“The NSW jersey holds immense significance for me,” he expressed. “Playing for the Blues was my ultimate dream as a child.
“It’s thrilling, as you never know where life will take you… I’m not sure what to expect, but I aim to bring as much energy as possible to the game and make the most of the opportunity.”
The Blues will battle Queensland in the series decider on Wednesday night.
