Darren Lockyer has lavished significant praise on Dolphins prodigy Isaiya Katoa, asserting that he is “the closest resemblance” to replicating Nathan Cleary’s style of play.
Despite the Dolphins managing only one victory from their first five outings this season, the 21-year-old has been a standout performer for the team based in Redcliffe.
Katoa starred in the Dolphins’ recent win over the Titans but faces a formidable challenge on Thursday night when they take on reigning champions Penrith.
Having originally come through the Panthers’ ranks, Katoa relocated north touted as one of Australia’s most promising young playmakers and is beginning to showcase his potential.

In what is perhaps the most significant endorsement of his undeniable talent, Lockyer is confident the halfback will meet the challenge posed by the league’s top player, Cleary.
“I believe Katoa is probably the closest you can get to Nathan,” he remarked on Wide World of Sports’ QLDER.
“The way he plays involves a lot of running, similar to Nathan’s style.”

“It’s quite fascinating — it’s the master against the apprentice.”
“I reckon the challenge will motivate Katoa, and he’ll rise to the occasion.”
While Katoa’s stats at the start of the season may not be eye-catching — with just two try assists — his average of 113 run metres per game places him among the top playmakers in the league.
Lockyer also holds the view that following a confidence-boosting win last weekend, Kristian Woolf’s side could well spring a surprise against a faltering Penrith team.
“I believe they have a solid chance,” he stated.
“Yes, you can’t discount Penrith, but the Dolphins, after that performance, have regained their energy and will be a tough opponent.”
