Rugby league icon Darren Lockyer asserts that the recent fitness concerns surrounding Cowboys star Jason Taumalolo “underscore the dangers” linked to long-term contracts.
The renowned forward is approaching the conclusion of an extensive 10-year agreement with North Queensland, but has struggled to maintain the same level of performance as he did earlier in his career.
In recent seasons, Taumalolo has had issues with his fitness and was absent from the team’s first two matches this season while recovering from a Lisfranc injury sustained during the off-season.
With the Cowboys suffering defeats in both matches without their star player, the scrutiny on Taumalolo’s contract has intensified.

“This only serves to illustrate the potential hazards associated with a 10-year agreement,” Lockyer remarked on Wide World of Sports’ QLDER.
“There’s no question about his talent and past contributions to the sport, as well as what he can still provide, but when the body begins to falter… you aren’t receiving value for your investment.”
“We recognise his potential, but his fitness levels need to reach an optimal stage.”

“The most exceptional players are the game-managing halfbacks. If you discover one, lock them in for 10 years. Beyond that, the risk isn’t worth it.”
“No shade on Jason; he secured an incredible deal for him and his family, but it underscores the reality that a middle-forward will inevitably face physical challenges.”
Lockyer’s remarks follow Dylan Brown signing a landmark 10-year, $13 million deal with the Knights, establishing the largest contract in NRL history.
The only other current player bound to a similar duration is Tino Fa’asuamaleaui at the Titans, while veteran playmaker Daly Cherry-Evans has thrived under a comparable lengthy contract, having re-signed to remain in the northern beaches for 2024 and 2025 after completing an eight-year deal worth approximately $10 million.

Taumalolo has been selected to make his return for North Queensland after successfully clocking over 50 minutes of play in reserve grade last weekend, which is a significant boost for the team.
“His absence from the squad can only be explained by the injuries,” remarked Wally Lewis.
“He has to rediscover his best form… it’s crucial for him to take that experience into account and guide the Cowboys moving forward.”
Todd Payten’s squad is set to face the Broncos this Friday night.
