Billy Slater has indicated that elevating Cronulla into true NRL premiership contention this season demands more than just the signing of one standout player.
The Sharks showcased their potential in a tight 28-22 defeat against four-time reigning champions Penrith on Sunday in Las Vegas, impressing many in the process.
However, although they came close to clinching the win against the leading team, the outcome underscored a persistent critique of the Shire-based club.
In previous seasons, the Sharks have consistently managed to secure victories against teams ranked lower than them on the ladder, yet they struggle to defeat other top-four contenders.
Since clinching their sole NRL title in 2016, they have missed the finals only once, finishing ninth in 2021.

Despite performing consistently, the current squad has yet to reach a grand final, much less secure a victory in one.
Star recruit Addin Fonua-Blake made a vital contribution with a try on Sunday, emerging as one of the standout players for Cronulla.

However, when questioned if the addition of the imposing Tongan could be the crucial factor in Cronulla’s quest for a premiership, Slater pointed out that the responsibility does not solely lie with Fonua-Blake.
“While his presence can certainly assist, it’s critical that every other individual within the team aims to elevate their game to that of a premiership player,” he stated during Nine’s Billy Slater Podcast.
“That’s the level the Sharks need to achieve. They are a consistent team and currently sit in the top four, but that’s all.
“It’s been eight years since they’ve graced a grand final, and I doubt any of the current players have experienced that match.
“While Addin Fonua-Blake will undoubtedly boost their confidence, he also brings a spark, as we witnessed during crucial moments where the Sharks needed a lift.
“Everyone has to significantly raise their performance to take the team to the next level, similar to how Nathan Cleary did yesterday and Isaah Yeo did, generating energy for extended periods and displaying the finesse to execute key plays.
“I believe that’s where the Sharks must improve, and they have the capability to do so.
“They possess the talent necessary to take that next step and reach the grand final.”
Cronulla’s halfback Nicho Hynes commands a salary exceeding $1 million annually, but he has faced scrutiny for not stepping up in pivotal moments too frequently.
In stark contrast, Penrith’s superstar No.7 Cleary rose to the occasion when it mattered most on Sunday, orchestrating a well-deserved victory, a feat he has accomplished time and again over the years.
The Sharks are set to face North Queensland on March 15.
