Storm icon Billy Slater has expressed his confidence in the beleaguered Panthers, insisting that the four-time defending champions shouldn’t be “written off” despite their rough start to the season at 1-4.
Following their recent loss to the Cowboys in round five, Penrith finds themselves in unfamiliar territory, a situation they haven’t experienced in over five years.
In this week’s edition of Nine’s Billy Slater Podcast, the legendary fullback recalled a comparable scenario he faced in Melbourne thirteen years ago.

“I definitely wouldn’t write Penrith off,” Slater commented.
“For the past five years, they’ve rarely beaten themselves, but in recent weeks, they’ve committed 16 errors, which is effectively beating themselves.”
“Back in 2012, we were in a similar position at Melbourne when we lost five games mid-season, yet we went on to lift the trophy at the end of the year.”
“To dismiss the Panthers at this stage takes a lot of guts, whether you’re a man or woman.”
“They possess too much talent and strong habits—though not visible in their latest games—that have been ingrained within their squad, so it’s premature to count them out now.”
Since 2021, Penrith’s dominance has been noteworthy, but they’ve recently suffered four consecutive defeats following a narrow victory over the Cronulla Sharks in Las Vegas.
This slump has left the Panthers languishing in 15th place on the ladder, with many questioning their prospects of making the finals.
Defensive issues have been evident in every loss, yet Slater reminded fans of Penrith’s capability to regain momentum swiftly.

“Nathan Cleary made a significant impact upon his return over the weekend,” he observed.
“The team appeared more fluid in their play, although they still faced setbacks on the scoreboard. Defensive issues remain a concern.”
“Plus, there are evident problems with ball control, but I firmly believe they can turn things around.”
“If Dylan Edwards returns this week, I genuinely think they’re close to finding their rhythm, and they possess the quality to go on a run.”
Penrith will be facing the Dolphins on Thursday, keen to snap their losing streak.
