Billy Slater has urged the promising young talent Jaxon Purdue to remain patient as he continues to progress in his career with the Cowboys, following a standout beginning to his NRL journey.
The 19-year-old made his North Queensland debut last year, featuring in eight matches, but has significantly improved this season, notching up five tries in just six games.
Initially starting his NRL career in the centres, Purdue is seen as a potential option in the halves, a position he excelled in during his junior football days.
At present, the Cowboys have Jake Clifford and Tom Dearden holding down the halves positions, while Tom Duffy is considered a strong candidate for the long-term No.7 role.

Slater praised the young star, highlighting his impressive start to the current season.
“I really admire the humility he displays, he doesn’t seek the limelight, and he keeps celebrations understated; he simply focuses on his work, performing admirably in a position that isn’t his primary one,” he remarked on The Billy Slater Podcast.
“He’s already a strong player, but he has the potential to become an exceptional one in the future.
“Understanding that his favoured position is in the halves, perhaps at five-eighth, it’s exciting to think about what he could achieve after a couple of off-seasons and gaining more footy knowledge before moving into his preferred spot. I genuinely believe he’ll be a fantastic asset for the Cowboys for many years ahead.”

Purdue’s contract is set to run until the conclusion of the 2026 season, and the Queensland Maroons coach hopes he’ll remain with the club for much longer.
“It would be fantastic if he stays with the Cowboys; he’s from the Cowboys’ heartland in Mackay, and I’d love to see him represent the team for the long haul,” he added.
