The race for the fullback position in Queensland’s State of Origin series is heating up, with Kalyn Ponga’s stellar form putting Reece Walsh in the spotlight.
Newcastle’s star player has been exceptional during the opening weeks of the season, currently leading the Dally M leaderboard and guiding his team to consecutive victories.
Although Ponga came off the bench during last year’s Origin finale, he has begun to catch the attention of selectors with his electrifying start to the season with the Knights.
The 26-year-old showcased his brilliance in round two, playing a pivotal role in Newcastle’s triumph over the Dolphins, while his key competitor for the Maroons fullback position struggled against the Raiders.

Although coach Billy Slater is tight-lipped about his selection decisions, his remarks following Ponga’s latest performance may hint at his inclinations.
“He was absolutely outstanding, a perfect 10 in my eyes,” the Queensland mentor declared on Nine’s The Billy Slater Podcast on Monday.
“I attended the match at McDonald Jones Stadium and witnessed Kalyn dismantle the Dolphins.
“He has become a key figure in that team, and this performance was no fluke. He has been influential consistently over the past two years.
“Their success in the first two games of the season can be largely attributed to Kalyn’s contributions.
“He is the catalyst, making plays, and has taken on a greater role in the kicking game while directing the attack. He enjoys enough freedom, and their playing style allows him to receive the ball in advantageous situations.
“He was exceptional… so impactful, not only in attack but also with crucial try-saving tackles.”

Ponga’s representative career has been hindered by injuries and concussions since he made his Origin debut nearly seven years ago.
Walsh made a significant impact for the Maroons during his debut series in 2023 but struggled to replicate that performance in last year’s series against NSW, which ended in a 2-1 defeat.
Although he had some promising moments in Brisbane’s first game, his performance against Canberra on Saturday was marred by errors.
With Ponga and Walsh not set to face each other until round 25, their competition remains irrelevant for Origin selectors at this point.
