Andrew Johns has expressed that the inconsistencies in the treatment of NRL players leaving clubs have turned into a situation that is “amusing and confusing” following recent occurrences.
This year has seen a flurry of contract disputes making headlines, particularly with Lachlan Galvin’s choice to exit the Wests Tigers, which sparked a strong negative backlash.
Recent reports emerged this week about the Sydney Roosters pushing two of their players out, with Brandon Smith and Dom Young both set to exit their contracts prematurely.
During an episode of Immortal Behaviour on Wide World of Sports, Johns shared his perspective on the discrepancies surrounding the uproar faced by Galvin compared to that of the Roosters’ situation.

“What I find slightly amusing, not quite hypocritical, is when Lachie Galvin departed, there was an uproar,” Johns remarked.
“Yet, when a club decides to release a player, it seems to go unnoticed.”
“I honestly find it to be both puzzling and humorous.”

Young still has over two years remaining on his contract at Bondi but has been informed he is free to negotiate and sign with another club immediately.
The 23-year-old English winger is anticipated to return to the Newcastle Knights, a move that Johns believes is beneficial for everyone involved.

“His form has dropped off this year; defensively, he has really struggled with some errors and his confidence is low,” he commented.
“With the rise of players like Mark Nawaqanitawase and Daniel Tupou securing another year, it looks like (Young) will be leaving. I anticipate he’ll return to Newcastle.”
“That move should help him regain his confidence.”
As for Smith, all indications suggest he is set to join South Sydney shortly, despite the Roosters wanting him to see out his contract until the end of 2025.
Johns insists that the Rabbitohs would be a perfect fit for the Kiwi international.
“If anyone is capable of managing characters and players who can be a handful, it’s Wayne Bennett. I believe there will be a solid mutual trust between the coach and player,” he shared.
“I think they will bring out the best in Brandon. I sincerely hope he recaptures his form like he had at Melbourne, as he is genuinely a great bloke.”
Teenage talent Galvin stirred up a hornet’s nest among Tigers fans last month when his manager declined a hefty contract extension.
He remains contracted to the club until the end of 2026, but speculation is rife that he will be packing up and leaving early, particularly after the visible tension with several teammates following his decision.
