As Isaiya Katoa dazzled against the Rabbitohs last weekend, Andrew Johns watched with admiration.
Once he regained his composure, he promptly messaged Nathan Cleary.
“Katoa” was all he wrote.
Cleary’s response was succinct: “on another planet”.
This exchange is a regular occurrence between two of New South Wales’ finest halfbacks, and Katoa is consistently part of their discussions.

Currently, Cleary and Katoa find themselves in the State of Origin camp, with Katoa named in the extended squad. Upon Katoa’s selection, Johns immediately messaged Cleary.
“Look after this kid, because when the time comes, he’ll be stepping straight into your shoes,” Johns advised, as he disclosed on Wide World of Sports’ Immortal Behaviour.
He elaborated on how crucial Cleary’s mentoring could be for Katoa throughout their time in camp.

The 21-year-old is widely regarded as a rising star, well positioned to take over the representative role from Cleary in due course.
“It’s essential that he shadows Nathan to observe his preparation—how he gets ready for training, how he conducts himself in team meetings, what he shares during discussions, and how he interacts with teammates on the field during practice. Every single detail matters,” Johns mentioned regarding Katoa’s experience in Origin camp this week.

“I trust Izzy is closely observing Nathan—it’s essential for him to learn the ropes. Soon, it’ll be his team … when he arrives, whether that’s in three or four years, he should be ready to take charge; that’s an exciting prospect,” Johns articulated.
The timeline for when Katoa will assume the role of Blues halfback is intriguing.
At just 21 years of age, he is six years younger than Cleary. Speculation arose when Cleary faced uncertainty ahead of Origin III, suggesting Katoa could be called up as his replacement.
However, the five-eighth position looks secure for Mitchell Moses and Jarome Luai at the moment.
When Cleary eventually steps away from that No.7 jersey, it remains uncertain, especially given the buzz surrounding his possible shift to rugby union. He is under contract until the end of 2027.
Meanwhile, Moses has consistently impressed in his role as Cleary’s deputy.
Ultimately, when the day arrives, NSW can be confident they’ll have a worthy successor to lead them.
