Patrice Evra, the former full-back for France, is set to embark on a new journey into the world of mixed martial arts, with his debut fight slated for May in Paris, as announced by the American promoter, the Professional Fighters League (PFL), on Friday.
The PFL stated, “The former captain of ‘Les Bleus’ is ready to chase his new dream of competing in an MMA match.”
According to the PFL, the 43-year-old has been honing his skills in combat sports since 2016, training alongside his friend and Paris-based PFL fighter, Cedric Doumbe.
“You all should know by now, I have a passion for this sport as well! I’ve performed on the grandest stages, clinched every significant trophy in football, but the PFL Europe event in Paris will hold a uniquely special place in my heart,” expressed Evra, who earned 81 caps for France and had stints with Manchester United and Juventus.
“I’ve trained with some of the best in the world for years, and they can vouch that I’m prepared for this.”
Details regarding his opponent will be revealed “shortly.”
On social media, Evra light-heartedly suggested a match against former Uruguayan footballer Luis Suarez, with whom he had a notorious confrontation during a Liverpool-Manchester United game in 2011, where Suarez received an eight-match ban for racial abuse.
Evra commented online that the PFL “asked who I’d like to fight. I said: Luis Suarez… he can even bite me.”
The fight is scheduled to take place on the PFL card on May 23rd at the Accor Arena in Paris.
