Former Netherlands international Urby Emanuelson has revealed that he is in discussions with Ajax regarding the vacant assistant coaching position at the club.
The 39-year-old Emanuelson began his professional journey at Ajax, having honed his skills in the club’s renowned youth academy. During his time with Ajax from 2004 to 2011, the versatile player made 255 appearances, securing three KNVB Beker trophies and three Johan Cruyff Shields. After earning 17 caps for the Dutch national team, he went on to represent clubs such as AC Milan, Fulham, AS Roma, Atalanta, Hellas Verona, Sheffield Wednesday, and FC Utrecht before hanging up his boots in 2022.
Post-retirement, Emanuelson took on assistant roles at FC Utrecht before returning to Ajax, where he has served as an assistant manager for the club’s U21 team since 2023.
Currently in Slovakia as a commentator for the U21 European Championships, Emanuelson confirmed that he is in talks to assist head coach and former teammate John Heitinga with the senior squad.
“I had hoped to keep this under wraps a bit longer. However, I am indeed in discussions with the club,” Emanuelson stated. “While nothing is set in stone yet, we are looking into the possibilities.”
Heitinga began his tenure at Ajax in late May, just under two weeks following the unexpected exit of Francesco Farioli.
