Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, has expressed his profound sorrow and disbelief at the tragic loss of his teammate Diogo Jota.
The 28-year-old lost his life alongside his younger brother Andre when their car veered off a motorway in northern Spain and tragically caught fire.
In a heartfelt post on his social media accounts, Van Dijk shared his shock and grief following the untimely death of Jota.
“I can’t believe it, I don’t want to accept it. I’m completely heartbroken and in utter disbelief,” said Van Dijk.
“What an extraordinary individual, a fantastic player, but above all, an incredible family man.”
Jota had recently married his long-term partner and mother of their three children, Rute Cardoso, just under two weeks ago.
“You meant the world to all of us and you always will! It is simply unimaginable for your family to lose two sons, a husband and a father. It’s so cruel and unfair. My heart aches for your beautiful family, for Rute and for your children. I promise that during these challenging times and beyond, we will stand by your family.”
Van Dijk and Jota shared the pitch for 131 matches as they represented the reigning Premier League champions.
“A champion forever, number 20 eternally. It has been an honour to stand alongside you on the pitch and to call you my friend off it.”
“Your absence will be felt beyond words, and we will never forget you. Your legacy will endure, and we will ensure that it does!”
“Rest in perfect peace, Diogo and André.”
