Essendon is anxiously awaiting news on Zach Merrett’s status after the Bombers’ captain made high contact with Sydney defender Nick Blakey during Saturday night’s match.
Although Essendon emerged victorious over the Swans by a narrow margin of eight points, Merrett may face a suspension following the incident where he clipped Blakey high in the fourth quarter.
With the Bombers leading by 15 points and just seven minutes left on the clock, Merrett attempted to tap the ball in a one-on-one clash but inadvertently made contact with Blakey’s head.
Blakey remained still on the turf at Marvel Stadium for a brief moment before being escorted off for a head injury assessment.
Sydney head coach Dean Cox was uncertain in his post-match press conference whether Blakey had successfully passed the test; however, after the game, the player affectionately known as “Lizard” appeared to be in good spirits and engaged in conversation.

“Both players were just contesting for the ball, in my opinion,” Cox stated when asked about the incident.
“That’s about all I can comment on from seeing it live. I didn’t have a chance to review it afterwards.”
Essendon coach Brad Scott was questioned about the incident but admitted he hadn’t had an opportunity to assess it in detail.
Richmond legend Jack Riewoldt came to Merrett’s defence on the Fox Footy broadcast.
“That’s simply a football play,” remarked the Tigers icon.
“What do they call it, the MRO? The reasonable player or the normal player or the perfect player?”
“I believe he was merely trying to tap the ball, and his eyes were clearly on the football. It was just an unfortunate accident.”
Essendon is set to take on the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium next Saturday evening.
