Valencia and Espanyol were forced to settle for a draw in a fiercely contested mid-table encounter in LaLiga, with Los Ches extending their winless streak against their rivals to six matches (D5, L1).
Having achieved an unbeaten run of seven league games over the weekend, Valencia were aware that a positive result against Espanyol would alleviate any remaining worries about relegation.
Carlos Corberan’s side started strongly, with Hugo Duro’s early header saved by Joan Garcia and Enzo Barrenechea firing high from a decent position inside the area.
The visitors found their rhythm as the first half went on, nearly taking the lead when Edu Exposito’s long-range effort struck the post, coming agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock.
Relieved by that near miss, Valencia sought to regain control as half-time approached, with Luis Rioja and Barrenechea both threatening to score.
However, despite dominating possession, it was Espanyol who broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, with Javi Puado converting Exposito’s powerful free-kick to notch his 11th goal in LaLiga this season.
The second half opened in much the same vein, with Valencia pushing hard for an equaliser.
That equaliser came just before the hour mark, as Javi Guerra latched onto a precise pass from Rioja to slot the ball smoothly into the bottom corner.
With newfound momentum, Los Ches maintained control of the game, diligently searching for a winning goal. Yet, Espanyol’s defence held firm, setting the stage for an exciting finish.
Corberan’s men appeared more likely to snatch a late winner, as Jose Gaya’s close-range header was brilliantly saved by Garcia.
Despite a fleeting opportunity for Espanyol’s Roberto Fernandez, neither side could find the critical finishing touch in the closing stages, as the visitors missed out on the chance to secure a third consecutive away victory.
