England’s hopes of victory were dashed as they played to a goalless draw against Slovenia in the UEFA European U21 Championship. This result marked the first time the Young Lions have failed to secure a win in their last nine matches at the finals.
The English side struggled defensively in the initial 10 minutes, with Svit Seslar not allowing them a moment’s comfort. He unleashed two attempts that were awkwardly handled by James Beadle, followed by an audacious effort that narrowly cleared the crossbar.
Seslar later delivered a corner, flicked on towards Adrian Zeljkovic, whose well-timed shot was smartly saved by Beadle. The England U21 goalkeeper then gathered a deflected long-range strike from Tio Cipot.
It took until the 21st minute for Lee Carsley’s team to create their first genuine opportunity. A clearance from Lovro Golic ricocheted off Marko Brest and fortuitously fell to James McAtee, who scuffed his shot off-target.
Charlie Cresswell then headed wide from a well-executed free-kick, while Ethan Nwaneri wasted a gilt-edged chance after Jonathan Rowe breezed past Brest and delivered a ball to the back post.
After Beadle tipped Seslar’s stunning strike over the bar, Harvey Elliott struck the woodwork with a looping first-time shot from a sweeping pass by Elliot Anderson, before curving another attempt over the bar just before half-time.

After the break, McAtee was thwarted again by an outstanding save from Martin Turk, with his follow-up shot rolling wide. Beadle matched this effort by denying a fierce strike from Seslar at the other end.
McAtee’s next attempt was deflected behind by Mitja Ilenic when he appeared set for a clear shot, and the resulting corner featured a cross that Rowe couldn’t connect with under pressure from Srdan Kuzmic.
In search of a breakthrough, Carsley made changes from the bench, but Slovenia remained resolute. Elliott failed to connect cleanly with a promising opportunity, leading to further frustration for England.
Jack Hinshelwood had a header superbly tipped over by Turk, while Cresswell sent his own header from the resulting corner wide, ultimately forcing England to settle for a draw.
Despite the lack of a win, England remain unbeaten in nine consecutive competitive fixtures, putting them at the top of Group B, ahead of Germany’s match against the Czech Republic later in the day. For Slovenia, however, the situation is dire with only one point from their five matches in this competition and no wins to their name.
