Alessia Russo, the striker for the England women’s football team, expressed her hopes for significant change following the recent conviction of former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales for sexual assault.
A judge at the Spanish High Court ruled last week that Rubiales was guilty of forcibly kissing Jenni Hermoso shortly after Spain triumphed over England in the 2023 World Cup final.
He received a fine of €10,800 but avoided a prison term.
The two teams are set to face each other in the Nations League at Wembley on Wednesday, marking their first encounter since that pivotal match in Sydney. Russo took the opportunity to voice her support for the Spanish side.
“We have stood in solidarity with them (the Spanish team) from the very beginning,” the Arsenal forward informed reporters during a pre-match press conference.
“It’s truly unfortunate that they have had to endure this situation, but we hope that this will lead to change moving forward.”
“It’s a testament to the bravery of the players to speak out while still managing to perform at such a high level. I have (club) teammates who have faced similar challenges and have handled it all with remarkable grace.”
England coach Sarina Wiegman also commended the courage displayed by the Spanish players as they challenged senior members of their own federation while keeping their performance levels consistent.
“Spain boasts an exceptional team, but this shows their resilience and bravery,” Wiegman remarked.
“We must continue discussing the Rubiales case, which is unfortunately necessary, and affirm to the world that we stand in solidarity with them. Hopefully, this will inspire change.”
Since the World Cup final, England has struggled to replicate the success they experienced early in Wiegman’s tenure.
The Lionesses kicked off their Nations League campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Portugal last Friday.
However, Wiegman isn’t approaching the match against Spain as a chance for revenge.
“I don’t view it as revenge,” she explained.
“Naturally, we were disappointed not to have clinched the win, but we move forward. This is the next game, and we intend to put forth our best performance.”
