Liverpool’s Wataru Endo has stated that Japan’s ambitions extend beyond simply qualifying for next year’s World Cup, as they aim to become the first team to secure their spot this Thursday.
The leaders of Asian Group C have been impressive throughout the qualifying rounds and can confirm their presence at the 2026 finals with a victory over Bahrain in Saitama.
A draw may also suffice, depending on the outcomes of other matches in the group.
Endo, the captain, emphasised that securing qualification is merely the beginning for a squad determined to make a significant impact at next summer’s tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
“Everyone knows that the third round of the Asian qualifiers is challenging, but we are aiming higher, and none of us are satisfied with where we are now,” the midfielder remarked to reporters on Wednesday.
“It is our ambitious goals that have shaped this team into what it is today.”
Japan has achieved five wins and one draw in their six matches during the third qualifying phase, holding a nine-point advantage over second-placed Australia.
Should they fall short against Bahrain, they’ll have another opportunity to secure qualification against Saudi Arabia at home next week, followed by two additional matches.
“I’m really looking forward to playing at home,” said Endo, who remained an unused substitute during Liverpool’s League Cup final loss to Newcastle on Sunday.
“The team is very motivated, and I feel the same way personally. Although our preparation time has been limited, we’re in good form.”
Coach Hajime Moriyasu has chosen a strong squad that includes several Premier League players, such as Endo, Kaoru Mitoma from Brighton, and Daichi Kamada from Crystal Palace.
“I want the players to showcase their individual skills while also working in unison as a team to give it their all,” Moriyasu stated.
“It’s my desire for us to secure our spot at the World Cup and celebrate together with our fans.”
Under Moriyasu’s guidance, Japan notably defeated Spain and Germany during the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, but were eliminated by Croatia on penalties in the second round.
They have reached this stage in 2002, 2010, and 2018, but have yet to advance further.
