After successfully deploying young, home-grown talent to overcome Juventus and secure a place in the Coppa Italia semi-finals for the first time, Empoli may continue this strategy as they fight to avoid relegation from Serie A.
The reigning champions Juventus presented a full-strength lineup on Wednesday, while Empoli made eight alterations following a heavy 5-0 loss to Atalanta. Their changes paid off, as they triumphed on penalties in a thrilling encounter.
A standout performer was 20-year-old defender Luca Marianucci, who nervelessly converted the decisive penalty in front of jubilant Juventus supporters. He had also successfully converted a penalty in Empoli’s previous shootout victory over Fiorentina.
Marianucci, who has been with Empoli since the age of seven, made his senior debut in the first round of the cup in August. However, he has only recently made his mark in the league, earning his first two Serie A starts this month.
Joining Marianucci in defence was 19-year-old Lorenzo Tosto, another product of Empoli’s youth academy, whose father, Vittorio, concluded his playing career at the club.
Tosto has played just a minute of Serie A action, coming on as a late substitute during Empoli’s 4-1 loss to Juventus earlier this month.
Midfielder Jacopo Bacci made his first starting appearance against Juventus. The 19-year-old had been a substitute in two league matches prior, and it was his pass that set up Youssef Maleh to give Empoli the lead.
Despite being winless in their last 11 league outings and currently sitting 18th in the standings, the young players who shone at Juventus Stadium might prove crucial in the upcoming fixtures, starting with Genoa on Sunday.
“The boys have achieved something remarkable, writing a historic chapter for this club, and this should motivate us in the league,” remarked Empoli manager Roberto D’Aversa.
“I had called for a display of pride, and they exceeded expectations. Three players from the youth academy were on the pitch. If we maintain this level of performance, we will accomplish our objectives.”
