Emerging tennis talent Joao Fonseca capped off “an incredible week” with a straight-sets triumph over Francisco Cerundolo in the final of the Argentina Open on Monday (AEDT).
The 18-year-old Brazilian secured his first ATP title with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6(1).
Bustling local fans in Buenos Aires contributed to an electric atmosphere during the final, reminiscent of a fierce Argentina vs Brazil football match.
In a moment of overwhelming joy, Fonseca fell to the clay court floor in a heartfelt reaction to his victory.

“This has been one incredibly memorable week for me,” Fonseca expressed.
“It’s just extraordinary. Every Brazilian, everyone from my country, craves this support. This moment I am experiencing is simply unbelievable.”
Despite his ambitions, Fonseca, who defeated ninth-ranked Andrey Rublev in the Australian Open’s opening round in January, is taking a measured approach.
“Naturally, I aspire to be No.1, to win major tournaments and titles – but my dream is simply to play tennis, and that’s exactly what I’m doing,” he said.
Fonseca has made history, becoming the first male player born in 2006 or later to claim a title and the youngest South American to win an ATP Tour trophy.
Following this victory, the teenager is set to climb to No.68 in the ATP rankings.
