Parramatta back-rower Shaun Lane has decided to take an indefinite hiatus from rugby league as he evaluates his future within the NRL.
In a recent announcement, the Eels confirmed that Lane will be stepping away for a while.
“Shaun Lane is taking time away from the sport to reflect on his future and will not be featuring in this weekend’s match,” the statement read.
“As a club, we are fully supportive of him during this time.”

While the club has voiced its support for Lane’s decision to take a break, it remains unclear whether he is contemplating retirement or simply needs some time off.
Prior to his hiatus, Lane had been dropped to reserve grade, where he was set to compete against the Western Suburbs Magpies on Monday before his withdrawal.
The highly regarded NSW Cup team was also expected to include Joe Ofahengaue.
In a related move, the former Queensland player was released by the Eels on Thursday to sign a multi-year deal with Super League club Leigh Leopards, effective immediately.
Lane is contracted with the Eels until at least the end of the 2025 season after signing a three-year extension in October 2022, which has a mutual option for 2026 that would require agreement from both parties.
The 30-year-old had knee surgery in the off-season, which kept him out of Parramatta’s season opener against Melbourne. However, he has since played in the Eels’ last five games.
Honoured as the 2022 Ken Thornett Medallist, Lane has previously discussed his battles with mental health throughout his career.
Parramatta is scheduled to face the Wests Tigers at CommBank Stadium on Easter Monday.
