Borussia Dortmund is solely concentrating on their upcoming clash against third-placed Mainz 05 this Sunday, with coach Niko Kovac asserting that they won’t be distracted by the remaining eight matches of the Bundesliga season.
Currently positioned at 11th with 35 points, Dortmund is ten points adrift of the fourth spot—the last automatic qualification place for the Champions League—while they prepare to face Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the prestigious tournament next month.
“Our focus is entirely on the match against Mainz 05,” Kovac declared in a press briefing. “It is essential that we secure a victory, no matter how we achieve it.
“There is an expectation for us to win this match. We aren’t contemplating the eight remaining league fixtures; our only concern is the game this weekend.”
Dortmund has had a shaky run lately, losing four of their last six league outings, including their most recent defeats against Augsburg and RB Leipzig.
“We must triumph on Sunday, and to do so, we will need a strong performance throughout most of the match,” Kovac emphasised. “No team can maintain dominance for the entire 90 minutes, but we must aim to perform effectively for more than just 45 minutes.
“If we can achieve that, we stand a good chance of winning.”
