Serhou Guirassy’s two goals propelled Borussia Dortmund into an enticing quarter-final clash with five-time FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) champions Real Madrid, following their 2-1 victory over Monterrey at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday.
The debutants in the CWC entered the match on an impressive undefeated streak of 10 matches (8 wins, 2 draws). This solid form allowed Niko Kovac’s team to dominate the early exchanges against Monterrey, marking their inaugural face-off against a Liga MX outfit.
The disparity in quality was evident early, as BVB broke the deadlock just 14 minutes in, with Guirassy delivering a decisive blow by slotting a one-on-one effort past Esteban Andrada, courtesy of an exquisite back-heel pass from Karim Adeyemi.
Undeterred, Monterrey aimed to respond immediately, with Jesus Corona’s cross-shot striking the outside of the post, followed by Nelson Deossa’s powerful attempt that forced a save from Gregor Kobel.
Dortmund didn’t take long to retaliate, with Guirassy doubling their lead just 10 minutes after his opener, once again taking advantage of Adeyemi’s vision to find the corner of the net with precision.
The Guinean striker continued to look threatening, narrowly missing out on a hat-trick just after the half-hour mark as he failed to connect with Jobe Bellingham’s delightful ball across the box.
Whatever was discussed in the Monterrey locker room at half-time appeared to work wonders, as they pulled one back just three minutes after the restart.
Having already scored twice in the tournament, German Berterame headed home from close range, giving Monterrey renewed hope.
Despite the arrival of the seasoned Marcel Sabitzer to help stem Monterrey’s momentum, Kobel had to display his best form to deny Corona’s one-on-one effort from sneaking in at the near post.
Monterrey’s push continued unabated, with Dortmund’s troubles persisting beyond the hour mark, as Berterame had a goal disallowed for a very tight offside call.
Even late tactical substitutions introducing attacking threats like Lucas Ocampos and Roberto de la Rosa couldn’t help Monterrey force extra time, as Dortmund ultimately held on despite a lacklustre performance in the second half, securing their place in Saturday’s showcase.

The lure of the Big Apple proved overwhelming for Monterrey, as they exit the 2025 FIFA CWC on a high note, having remained unbeaten in the group stage (1 win, 2 draws). A repeat of the 2024 UEFA Champions League final now awaits in New York this weekend.
