Former England international Dominic Calvert-Lewin announced on Sunday that he will depart Everton on a free transfer after failing to come to terms on a new contract with the Toffees.
The 28-year-old expressed his desire for a “new challenge” following a nine-year stint on Merseyside.
Once serving as a backup to Harry Kane as England’s leading striker, the former Sheffield United forward found the back of the net four times in 11 appearances for his country.
His last call-up to the England squad was as part of the team that reached the Euro 2020 final.
He leaves Everton as the club’s third-highest goalscorer in the Premier League, having netted 71 goals in 273 matches across all competitions.
Despite his talent, Calvert-Lewin’s career has been marred by several significant injury setbacks.
“After nine unforgettable years at this club, I’ve made the incredibly tough decision—along with my family—to embark on a new chapter in my career,” Calvert-Lewin shared in an Instagram post.
“The decision to move on wasn’t solely about me; it was a choice my family and I contemplated together for quite some time.
“We believe it’s the right time to pursue a new challenge and continue my development, but that doesn’t diminish the connection I will always have with Everton.”
Clubs such as Manchester United, Newcastle, and Chelsea have previously been mentioned as potential destinations for Calvert-Lewin.
