Dolphins prop Mark Nicholls is reportedly facing challenges at home as Queensland’s south-east coast braces for Cyclone Alfred, which is forecast to make landfall later this week.
The Courier Mail has indicated that Nicholls’ residence could be at risk of flash flooding.
In the hours leading up to his trip to Sydney for the Dolphins’ first-round match against the Rabbitohs on Friday night, he has been busy preparing his property.
As the severe weather system is set to unleash heavy rain and damaging winds across south-east Queensland and north-east New South Wales, the NRL made the decision to shift Friday night’s match from Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium to Sydney’s CommBank Stadium.

This decision contrasts with the AFL, which opted to delay two games that were originally scheduled for Brisbane and Gold Coast due to the impending cyclone.
“The NRL emphasised that the safety of players, fans, and the wider community takes precedence when assessing venue alterations,” a statement issued on Tuesday noted.
While this move allowed the match to proceed and avert potential scheduling conflicts, questions have emerged regarding the decision to separate Queensland players and staff from their families during a crisis.
On Instagram, Bree, the wife of Dolphins player Kodi Nikorima, voiced her concern, suggesting that the NRL has neglected the needs of players’ families during this vulnerable time.

“Leaving families to endure the cyclone on their own without much support,” she expressed. “I’m six months pregnant with two young kids in a flood-prone area, this is unacceptable. Do better, NRL.”

Meanwhile, the Brisbane season opener against the Sydney Roosters will proceed as planned at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Thursday night.
Coach Michael Maguire discussed the club’s efforts to support families and partners during this tumultuous time, describing their approach as “very proactive.”
“Our CEO even returned last night to ensure he is on the ground to help keep everyone safe while the team is away,” he stated.
“The club has been in touch with partners and wives to ensure their safety during this challenging period. It’s a new experience for all of us.
“Now, we simply wait and see how things unfold, but we are maintaining strong communication with families.”

Maguire acknowledged the sense of anticipation within the group and expressed hope that they could remain focused against the Roosters.
“We are addressing the situation as it arises,” he shared.
“Communication is vital during these times. We’re venturing into the unknown with this cyclone, and we must handle it as best we can.”
The Broncos will take on the Roosters at 8pm AEDT on Thursday.
