Last night marked the conclusion of Djurgarden’s most successful journey in a European tournament, as they fell 1-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, 5-1 on aggregate, in the Semi-Finals against the strong favourites for the UEFA Conference League (UECL) title. Despite the result, captain Jacob Une and head coach Jani Honkavaara were filled with pride in the aftermath.
A significantly altered Chelsea lineup broke the deadlock late in the second half with a goal from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, extinguishing any remaining hopes of a miraculous comeback by the Swedish side.
Following the match, Une expressed his mixed emotions to UEFA.com, stating, “Naturally, there’s a tinge of disappointment, though we understood it would be a challenging task coming here – especially given the result we faced back in Stockholm.”
“There’s some disappointment, but realistically we have to accept it. Ultimately, I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved.”
Une was quick to commend the unity and effort displayed by his team, saying, “I believe we covered for one another very well. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t score, but reflecting on everyone’s work and spirit – as captain – I am incredibly proud of our performance.”
Head coach Honkavaara also noted the team’s inability to find the back of the net, stating, “We were a bit lacking with the final touch. We created shooting opportunities, but Chelsea’s quality allowed them to block the attempts, making potentially good chances seem ineffective in the end.”
“I was pleased with our second-half performance; we found an extra gear. Of course, there’s always room for improvement. Maybe if we had scored, it could have changed the dynamic of the match and put Chelsea on edge, but unfortunately, we didn’t manage to do that. Chelsea demonstrated their quality.”
Djurgarden fans left a significant impression in West London, filling the away end and even occupying large areas reserved for Chelsea supporters, creating a vibrant atmosphere that pleased Honkavaara.
“After the match, I think everyone felt a bit let down, but seeing the fans’ reaction gave me a sense of calm and brought a smile to my face, because we have so much to be proud of as a team. We’ve come on this long journey together with our fans. I wouldn’t change a thing.”
This remarkable journey commenced in July, when Djurgarden entered the second qualifying round of the UECL, well before Honkavaara took the reins in December. In reflecting on the campaign, he was keen to acknowledge the contributions of his predecessors.
“It’s been historic. There were three coaches before me throughout the campaign, and they also deserve recognition for this achievement. I’m just grateful to have been a part of it.”
In closing, Une highlighted the significance of their journey, saying, “We have never reached the semi-finals in a European competition before, making this a truly valuable experience for us. It’s been a great opportunity for many young players to gain experience. We’ll build on this as we look to the next season.”
Chelsea now proceed to the UECL Final, where they will face Real Betis.
