During a TV interview on Monday night, Denmark’s national team coach, Brian Riemer, highlighted Alejandro Garnacho as an example of inappropriate conduct on the football field.
Riemer referred to an incident from the previous week when Manchester United’s new Danish winger, Patrick Dorgu, received a red card against Ipswich. Following this, coach Roben Amorim opted to substitute Garnacho for Noussair Mazraoui to strengthen the team’s defensive line while short-handed.
A visibly frustrated Garnacho reacted by storming down the tunnel before the first half concluded, much to the disappointment of the Old Trafford crowd and Amorim alike. Riemer expressed his disapproval of Garnacho’s behaviour following Dorgu’s dismissal.
As Riemer prepares to select his squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Portugal, he made it clear he would address players who elevate their own needs above those of the team, particularly those who publicly voice disagreement over substitutions or express dissatisfaction with their playing time.
“If I’m truly unhappy with a player, I won’t go to the media. I will discuss it with them directly afterwards. Likewise, if a player believes I’ve made a mistake regarding a substitution, they shouldn’t air that in public.”
Riemer and the Danish team are set to face Portugal on 20 March in the Nations League quarter-finals.
