Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has remarked that his side’s attacking talents were unable to penetrate Arsenal’s defence, resulting in their elimination from the tournament on Wednesday.
Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu, achieving an impressive 5-1 aggregate triumph that propels them into the semi-finals for the first time since 2009.
The Madrid squad, featuring stars such as Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, struggled to pose a threat to Arsenal’s backline until Vinicius struck in the 67th minute to equalise following Bukayo Saka’s initial goal.
“Our finishing lacked precision; I don’t believe Raya had a single save to make,” Courtois shared with Movistar.
“We were defeated by a stronger Arsenal and we must accept that…”
“We delivered plenty of crosses, but this year we are lacking a natural centre-forward like Joselu; we need to assess how we can improve.”
Mbappe, who transferred to Madrid from PSG last summer, found it challenging to evade Arsenal’s defenders, who effectively restricted the space he typically flourishes in.
“I believe we function as a team, but we need to focus more on collective movements rather than relying solely on individual efforts,” Courtois added.
“If they double up on Vini or Kylian, you may get a two-on-one situation to work once, but not consistently five times…
“It was quite difficult to create opportunities… (Arsenal) are a side that is tough to score against.”
