CONMEBOL has officially put forward a proposal to host the 2030 World Cup featuring 64 teams, thereby opening the door for more nations to partake in the festivities marking the tournament’s centenary, the South American governing body announced on Thursday.
The upcoming 2030 World Cup is set to be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with its inaugural matches taking place in Uruguay, the birthplace of the first World Cup in 1930, along with matches in Argentina and Paraguay.
“We firmly believe that the centenary celebration will be extraordinary as 100 years is a milestone that comes around just once. That is why we are suggesting, for the very first time, to organise this anniversary with 64 teams across three continents concurrently,” stated CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez.
The tournament has already seen an expansion from 32 to 48 teams for its forthcoming edition in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
FIFA, the governing body of football, has previously indicated that it will assess the proposal to extend the 2030 World Cup to accommodate 64 teams.
