Denmark will face a significant setback with the absence of their captain, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, in the upcoming Nations League matches against Portugal.
The Danish national side will be without Hojbjerg for these vital quarter-final encounters against Portugal. The midfielder, currently at Olympique Marseille, is sidelined due to a foot injury, which is expected to keep him out of the game for some time. Having missed training sessions on Thursday and Friday, he played the full match on Saturday against Lens.
Additionally, Hojbjerg couldn’t take part in training on Tuesday and has ultimately conceded the chance to recover in time for the eagerly anticipated clash with PSG this weekend.
“Pierre is not just our captain; he’s a crucial player who inspires the team and energises the crowd. It’s truly unfortunate to be losing him. However, injuries are part of football, and now others must step up and fulfil the role. Thankfully, we have plenty of talented players in that position,” remarked national coach Brian Riemer in a statement from the Danish Football Association.
To replace Hojbjerg, Riemer has summoned Morten Frendrup from Genoa.
“Morten has been performing exceptionally well. In this instance, I’ve opted for different players. He undoubtedly has a bright future with the national team ahead of him. I have great confidence in him, but there’s a limit to the number of players I can include in my squad,” Riemer explained after the initial team announcement.
Denmark is set to take on Portugal on the 20th and 23rd of March.
