In their inaugural clash at the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC), Palmeiras and FC Porto played to a goalless draw in Group A, marking their first competitive meeting.
Both teams wasted early opportunities to score; Joao Mario slipped through but saw his effort thwarted by Weverton. Shortly after, Palmeiras’ aggressive pressing caused issues for Porto, with the ball landing at Estêvão’s feet on the edge of the penalty area, but the young talent’s shot curled just wide.
Weverton’s heroics continued as he denied Felipe Anderson from inadvertently heading the ball into his own net and later tipped away Samu Aghehowa’s strike from a tight angle.
Drama ensued at the other end during stoppage time when Claudio Ramos executed a remarkable double save to thwart both Richard Rios and Mauricio from close range, with the latter’s follow-up effort being cleared off the line.
Given the opportunities created by both teams, it was surprising to see them head into the break goalless, particularly as Porto had not experienced a 0-0 halftime result in their previous 11 competitive outings.
As the second half commenced, the intensity continued, with Fabio Vieira making a strong run before curling a shot towards the bottom corner, only for Weverton to tip it around the post.
Ze Pedro then missed a great chance, heading over from a corner when he really should have done better. With both teams making substitutions to chase a winner, Allan came close by cutting inside before firing a shot towards the bottom corner, but Ramos was quick to react and made a vital stop.
In the waning moments, Palmeiras applied significant pressure, and Ramos once again showcased his skills, producing an impressive save to deny Murilo Cerqueira’s powerful header from a corner.
Ultimately, the Brazilians had to settle for a single point, meaning manager Abel Ferreira’s winless record against Porto stretched to seven encounters. Meanwhile, Porto saw their three-match winning streak come to an end, yet might feel satisfied with a draw based on how the match unfolded.
