A Chilean derby between Universidad de Chile and Colo Colo, which was set to take place this Sunday, has been postponed following a tragic incident on Thursday that resulted in the deaths of two young fans during a crush at a Copa Libertadores match held at the Monumental stadium.
According to Security Minister Luis Cordero, the decision to postpone the match between the two most prominent teams in Chile was made after a local police report highlighted unsafe conditions for the upcoming event.
The incident unfolded as home supporters attempted to enter the Monumental stadium in Santiago ahead of Colo Colo’s Group E Copa Libertadores clash against Brazilian side Fortaleza.
The deceased, a 13-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman, were caught in a crush against a fence near the venue.
“This is a profoundly sad and irreparable loss for their families, loved ones, and the Colo Colo club, following the tragic deaths of two young individuals,” stated Universidad de Chile coach Gustavo Alvarez in a public comment.
“The sorrow we feel transcends team loyalties. I express this on behalf of myself, the coaching staff, and the players at Universidad de Chile. We extend our deepest sympathies to their families and to Colo Colo.”
Protests erupted as Colo Colo supporters stormed the pitch during the match, which was still scoreless in the second half. In response, CONMEBOL, South America’s football governing body, chose to cancel the fixture.
“We believe that the suspension of this Superclasico is a victory for those who seek to impose violence and disrupt football. They are the ones who have coerced and intimidated to ensure this match isn’t played,” Universidad de Chile asserted in a statement.
A local Supercopa match between the two clubs in January had also been postponed due to security issues, although Universidad de Chile indicated that such concerns had been addressed.
“We have implemented numerous initiatives aimed at curbing violence and have invested heavily in making sure our matches are family-friendly events. Since these measures were put in place, we have seen no further incidents or security problems,” read the statement.
“Our club proposed a match scenario that was approved, satisfying all safety requirements outlined by the authorities, ensuring the wellbeing of all attendees.”
