Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, has conveyed his profound sorrow following the untimely death of Liverpool star Diogo Jota, offering his sympathies and support to the player’s family.
The 28-year-old, along with his brother Andre, tragically lost their lives on Thursday when their vehicle went off the motorway in Cernadilla, located in the Zamora province of northwestern Spain.
Jota, who joined the Reds from Wolves, was instrumental in Arne Slot’s Premier League-winning season last year, having previously lifted the FA Cup, the Community Shield, and the Carabao Cup on two occasions during his tenure at Anfield.
Before addressing the media in anticipation of Friday’s Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras, the Italian manager shared a touching message for the family of the Portuguese international.
“Today is extremely sad. I find it hard to articulate my feelings because it’s just so difficult. In situations like this, you truly feel powerless,” Maresca conveyed to the press.
“All I can say is that I’m sending all my love to his family; it’s an immense tragedy for them at this time.”
Furthermore, Maresca mentioned that it would be up to the grieving Pedro Neto to determine his availability for the match against the Brazilians at Lincoln Financial Field, following the loss of his close international friend.
Neto was absent from Chelsea’s training session in Miami on Thursday morning. Maresca confirmed that the player is under no obligation to participate against Palmeiras.
The Italian coach reassured that Neto would have the complete support of the club and the freedom to make his own choice regarding playing.
“Regarding Pedro, it’s profoundly sad, probably even more than just sad, but we are here for him to offer our support during this time,” he remarked.
“The decision is entirely Pedro’s. I spoke with him this morning, and we stand by him. Whatever decision he makes will be the right one, and we will support him regardless.”
“It’s not important whether he’ll take the field or not tomorrow; we’ll see how he feels, but in any case, we’re here for him.”
In response to the tragic loss of their striker, Liverpool released a statement: “Liverpool Football Club is heartbroken by the tragic loss of Diogo Jota.”
“The club has been informed that the 28-year-old lost his life in a road traffic accident in Spain, along with his brother, Andre.”
“Liverpool FC will not be making any further comments at this time and requests the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff is respected as they cope with this unimaginable loss. We will continue to offer them our unwavering support.”
The club also announced they will honour Jota’s memory by retiring his number 20 shirt, a heartfelt gesture ensuring that no player will wear it again, preserving his legacy for future generations.
Jota earned 49 caps for the senior national team of Portugal and played a pivotal role in their UEFA Nations League final victory against Spain in June.
