Chelsea are set to face a crucial encounter at home against Everton this Saturday, as they aim to secure a place in the Premier League’s top five and earn a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Under the guidance of Enzo Maresca, the team has struggled to find their footing, managing only two victories in their past five league outings, which sees them currently occupying sixth place with five matches left to play.
With rivals for the top five—Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, and Aston Villa—all involved in FA Cup semi-final matches this weekend, Chelsea has a prime opportunity to enhance their position.
However, dropping points against a resurgent Everton could put Chelsea’s chances of Champions League qualification at risk for a third consecutive year.
“While this season has been an improvement compared to the previous two, that does not diminish our ambition to finish in the top five,” the Italian manager remarked to the press.
“Our goal is the Champions League. We will strive to finish the season on a high note. The players are applying themselves diligently each day to elevate this club to where it belongs.”
Chelsea will be without right-back Malo Gusto for the match against Everton, as he sustained an injury during the victory over Fulham.
“Malo is hurt, but it doesn’t seem to be a serious injury. He’s already back to running outside, yet he won’t be available for tomorrow’s match,” Maresca confirmed.
Chelsea secured three crucial points with an impressive comeback win against Fulham last week, highlighted by Pedro Neto’s stunning last-minute goal—his fourth league strike this season.
Maresca expressed a desire for even more contributions from the Portuguese winger, who was brought in from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
“Pedro has been a significant asset for us,” he said. “Overall, he’s performing well, having netted four or five goals in the Premier League. For me, our wingers should ideally aim for around 10 goals by season’s end. While Pedro is doing nicely, there’s no doubt he can improve his goal tally.”
Chelsea currently have 57 points from 33 matches, equalling the tally of seventh-placed Aston Villa, who have played one game more, and are two points behind Newcastle United, who will face 18th-placed Ipswich Town.
Nottingham Forest are sitting on 60 points, closely followed by third-placed City on 61.
“We’ve been in and around the top positions for most of the season,” commented Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella. “It’s true that we’ve experienced a bit of inconsistency recently, but ultimately, it is in our hands.”
