The Western Sydney Wanderers have strengthened their midfield with the acquisition of Steven Ugarkovic, who brings with him a wealth of experience from his Championship-winning days in the Isuzu UTE A-League. The 30-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the club.
Ugarkovic recently celebrated a Championship victory with Melbourne City before his departure, having made over 60 league appearances across two seasons with the club as his contract reached its conclusion.

Returning to his roots, Ugarkovic has played over 200 matches in the Isuzu UTE A-League and is excited to join the club where he featured during the 2021-2022 season.

“The chance to come back home and play for my hometown club a second time was always something I aspired to,” Ugarkovic expressed.
“I’ve matured over time and realise that this is where I genuinely want to be, for my own sake, my career, and my family.
“I’m driven by the desire for success and trophies on the pitch, but equally important to me is the positive influence I can have off it.”
He continued: “I’m eager to contribute to the club, the supporters, and the broader community.”
In addition to Ugarkovic’s signing, the Wanderers have also acquired four-time A-Leagues champion Kosta Barbarouses on a one-year deal, marking Ugarkovic as their second signing this off-season.

Coach Alen Stajcic remarked, “Ugarkovic’s return to his hometown club really highlights the significance of this place to him.”
“He has evolved significantly as both a player and an individual, and that growth will be a tremendous asset to the team. His focus is on victory, but he is also dedicated to giving back,”
“His commitment to success and desire to support the community embodies the mentality we’re aiming for.”
He concluded, “Bringing him back not only bolsters our team but also carries immense significance for our members, supporters, and the broader community.”
With Ugarkovic and Barbarouses now on board, the Wanderers are anticipated to make further signings in the upcoming months, particularly following the departures of several prominent players.
2025 Johnny Warren Medallist Nicolas Milanovic has transferred to Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen, striker Zac Sapsford has moved to Dundee United, and Swedish forward Marcus Antonsson has also left after his contract’s expiry. This opens up opportunities for Stajcic to enhance the attacking line-up before the new season kicks off.
In addition, experienced Korean defender Jeong Tae-wook has returned to his parent club after completing his loan deal, while left-back Jack Clisby has also exited the Wanderers.
