Carlos Vela, the former attacker for Arsenal and Real Sociedad, has announced his retirement from professional football after an impressive 19-year career, the 36-year-old confirmed on Tuesday.
Vela rose through the ranks of Arsenal’s youth academy and made his senior debut while on loan at Salamanca in Spain. He made 29 appearances in the Premier League for Arsenal before enjoying a seven-year tenure at LaLiga’s Sociedad.
Versatile in his play, whether as a forward, attacking midfielder, or winger, Vela also earned 72 caps for the Mexican national team, helping the side secure the CONCACAF Gold Cup on two occasions.
“I have had the privilege of experiencing many special moments throughout my career, but the time has come for me to officially retire from professional football,” he shared on Instagram.
“It has been an honour and a privilege to have shared my career with all of you.”
After joining Los Angeles FC in 2018, Vela played a vital role in leading the Major League Soccer club to victory in both the MLS Cup and the US Open Cup.
He netted a record 34 goals during the 2019 MLS season and holds the titles for most goals, assists, and appearances in the club’s history.
“He has been the heartbeat, the captain, and the face of LAFC,” stated club co-president and general manager John Thorrington.
