Carlo Ancelotti has acknowledged that Real Madrid might consider appointing a new coach following their elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Arsenal in the quarter-finals on Wednesday night.
The Italian tactician witnessed his side succumb to a 2-1 defeat on home soil, with Arsenal advancing on a 5-1 aggregate score to reach the semi-finals.
This defeat marked the 12th for Real Madrid this season, a stark contrast to the mere two losses experienced throughout the entire previous campaign.
“It’s possible the club may opt for a change in coach, whether that be this year or at the conclusion of my contract next year; I’m not concerned about it,” Ancelotti remarked to the media.
“When the day comes that I leave this place, I will have nothing but gratitude for the club.
“It could happen tomorrow, in ten days, a month, or a year, but my main focus will always be to express my appreciation for the club, irrespective of my contract status.”
Madrid have been speculated to have an interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s coach Xabi Alonso, a former player for Los Blancos, as well as ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
Despite the setback, Ancelotti asserted that his team remains in contention for La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Club World Cup this summer.
“The squad put forth tremendous effort in terms of attitude, but we fell short in execution,” he commented following the defeat to Arsenal.
“To be fair, Arsenal defended exceptionally well; we struggled to find any space. While we had the upper hand in intensity, it simply wasn’t enough.“
