Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted his team struggled with balance and control during their match against relegation-threatened Leganes, but he commended their determination to secure a gritty 3-2 victory over their city rivals on Saturday.
The Italian tactician expressed satisfaction with the performance that saw his side draw level on points with La Liga leaders Barcelona, who are set to play on Sunday. However, he noted defensive shortcomings that led to two goals conceded, leaving them trailing 2-1 at halftime.
“I wouldn’t say we performed poorly. We did have control, but we lacked balance, which was the reason behind the two goals we conceded,” Ancelotti informed the media.
“They capitalised on our counter-attacks and we struggled when we lost possession. We should have managed our lead better. Even with the 3-2 result, we found it challenging, but that’s normal after an international break; it takes time to regain our rhythm.”
The match started positively for Real as Kylian Mbappe scored from the penalty spot, only for Diego Garcia to level the score quickly, followed by Dani Raba putting the visitors ahead right before the break.
“After the penalty, we could have handled the situation better. The team wasn’t positioned well, which led to conceding,” Ancelotti remarked.
He refuted claims of a lack of focus within the team, stating that enduring hardships to secure victories is an inherent part of football.
“We showed great intensity; it was evident in the second half when we managed to turn the game around,” he asserted.
“You have to go through tough times. I can’t recall a match where we didn’t face adversity. What counts is that we endure together. When sacrifices are needed, we all step up.”
“Matches of football are never easy, and we fully recognise that.“
The coach also showered praise on Mbappe, who netted twice to bring his season tally to 33 goals across all competitions for the club, matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s record during his debut season with Real.
“He’s performing exceptionally well – much more active and engaged in the game,” Ancelotti noted regarding the French star.
“He’s adapted brilliantly and is making a significant impact, which is precisely what we expect from him.“
Real Madrid will face Real Sociedad in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Tuesday, leading 1-0, before they take on Valencia in La Liga next Saturday and travel to Arsenal for their Champions League quarter-final first leg.
