Carlo Ancelotti has acknowledged that Real Madrid might consider finding a new coach following their exit from the Champions League, with Arsenal knocking them out in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
The Italian manager witnessed his side succumb to a 2-1 defeat at home, resulting in a 5-1 aggregate loss that sent the Gunners through to the semi-finals.
This defeat marked Real Madrid’s 12th of the current season, a sharp contrast to the mere two losses they experienced throughout the entirety of the previous campaign.
“It’s possible that the club may opt for a change (of coach), it might happen this year – or next when my contract is up, I have no issue with that,” Ancelotti shared with the media.
“The day I depart from here, all I can do is extend my gratitude to the club.
“Whether it’s tomorrow, in 10 days, a month, or a year, I’ll only have gratitude for the club – whether my contract ends or not, it’s irrelevant to me.”
Madrid have been linked with potential replacements, including Bayer Leverkusen’s coach Xabi Alonso, a former player for Los Blancos, as well as ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
Despite the setback, Ancelotti emphasised that his team remains in contention for La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Club World Cup this summer.
“The team showed great spirit, but we couldn’t convert that into a result,” Ancelotti stated after the loss to Arsenal.
“To be frank, Arsenal defended exceptionally well; we struggled to create opportunities. We had more intensity, yet it simply wasn’t sufficient.”
