The Confederation of African Football (CAF), in partnership with the Local Organising Committees from the host countries of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, has officially announced the match schedule for the eagerly awaited 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to occur in August.
This eighth edition of the biennial tournament, organised by CAF and showcasing national teams comprised of players from their respective domestic leagues, will commence on August 2 and conclude on August 30.
The tournament will kick off on Saturday, August 2, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, featuring a matchup between co-host Tanzania and Burkina Faso at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, scheduled to start at 20:00 local time.
On Sunday, August 3, Nairobi will host two fixtures: Kenya, led by South African coach Benni McCarthy, will begin their campaign at 15:00 local time against the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Later that day at 18:00 local time, Morocco will face Angola at Nyayo Stadium.
Returning to the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium at 20:00, Madagascar will take on Mauritania in an exciting Sunday of football. The opening matches in Kampala will occur on Monday, August 4, 2025, when co-hosts Uganda will face Algeria at 20:00 local time, preceded by a match between Niger and Guinea at 17:00, also at the same venue.
The Third-Place Play-Off is set to occur in Kampala on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Mandela Stadium, with a kick-off at 18:00 local time. The final will be held the next day, Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Nairobi’s Kasarani at 18:00 local time.
Following their opener against DR Congo, Kenya’s second match will see them go head-to-head with Angola on Tuesday, August 7, followed by a clash against Morocco on Sunday, August 10, and concluding their group stage against Zambia’s Chipolopolo on Sunday, August 17.
Citing CAF, the tournament’s group stages will be formatted as follows: Group A includes Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia in Nairobi.
Group B will feature Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic in Dar es Salaam, while Group C, comprising Uganda, Niger, Guinea, South Africa, and Algeria, will take place in Kampala. Finally, Group D—featuring Senegal, Congo, Sudan, and Nigeria—will conduct their matches in Zanzibar.
Zanzibar has been included as a venue, with the new Amaan Stadium, which successfully hosted the CAF Confederation Cup 2024/25 final between Tanzania’s Simba SC and Morocco’s RS Berkane in May, set to host the matches for Group D.
Uganda Announces Squad for CHAN Tournament
In the meantime, the Uganda Cranes have revealed their provisional squad for the tournament. The list, compiled by the technical panel of Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso, includes 41 players, all from the Ugandan Premier League, as per tournament regulations, save for James Bogere from Masaka Sunshine FC, a regional league team.
This marks Uganda’s seventh appearance at the CHAN tournament. The Cranes are eager to make history by progressing past the group stage for the first time, spurred on by enthusiastic local support and a strong connection to their home ground.
