The Bulldogs’ head coach, Cameron Ciraldo, has proposed changes to the 18th man regulations for the State of Origin.
Max King, Stephen Crichton, and Matt Burton will miss the Bulldogs’ match against the Rabbitohs this Sunday.
Burton, selected solely as the 18th man, is unlikely to see any action in the second game where the Blues aim to clinch their second consecutive series victory, and he will remain unavailable for the Bulldogs this weekend.
This will mark the fifth occasion Burton has been named as the 18th man for the New South Wales side, with his only prior Origin appearances being in the second and third matches of the 2023 series.
Ciraldo believes the rules should be adjusted to allow the 18th man to participate in club matches in the weekend leading up to Origin.

“It would be fantastic for the system to be reviewed in the future, allowing those 18th men to play and then take on that responsibility,” he mentioned to reporters on Friday.
“We’ve tasked Burto with improving his game in Origin and returning to the Bulldogs as a better player.”

The NRL advised 9News they have no intentions of amending the rule.
Although he is already in camp, Burton was passed over by Blues coach Laurie Daley in favour of Jarome Luai, following Mitchell Moses’ calf injury.
Ciraldo responded to questions regarding the decision calmly.
“Coaches make decisions with the team’s best interests in mind. That’s what NSW is doing, and it’s what we’re doing here,” he said.
“Those decisions are up to their coaches, and we’ll make ours, too.
“Burto would love to play on that stage, but he’s a player who always prioritises the team, wherever he goes.”
Also, winger Jacob Kiraz was placed on stand-by for the Blues as a replacement for Brian To’o but returned to Bulldogs training on Friday and is set to feature on Sunday.
