Brisbane Broncos player Ezra Mam has addressed the media for the first time since his conviction for drug driving, skillfully sidestepping inquiries about the specifics of the incident.
The 22-year-old has incurred a nine-match suspension from the NRL as a result of this off-field matter, along with a significant fine from his club.
Mam faced reporters at Red Hill on Thursday, where he was compelled to respond to questions regarding the accident and his cocaine use.

“I’m not going to dwell on that right now,” he stated.
“That’s in the past, and I’m focused on moving forward. I’ve been putting in the work quietly to navigate through that period.
“I am fully aware that I have a significant influence on young people. What’s done is done, and I’ve had to come to terms with it. I believe the only way to show I’m back on track is through my actions and rebuilding trust in my conduct both on and off the field.
“I sincerely apologise and regret my actions. I acknowledge my wrongdoing, but my focus is now on getting things right.”
Following the incident, Mam sought rehabilitation and has since put significant effort into improving his life beyond rugby.

The five-eighth revealed he has also made attempts to connect with the victims, including a young girl hurt in the accident.

“Before the court proceedings, I couldn’t reach out to the victims for legal reasons, which weighed heavily on my mind,” Mam explained.
“As soon as the court case concluded, I contacted them to express my feelings and my desire to meet up and convey how sorry I was.
“I’ve attempted to reach out to them multiple times to arrange a meetup, but I want to be mindful of their space and not be intrusive. I respect their boundaries, and whenever they’re ready to respond, we can go from there.”
Although Mam won’t be back on the field until May, he recognised the situation could have been significantly worse.
There were discussions about the possibility of the Broncos terminating his lucrative contract, a reality Mam acknowledged during a tense media session, during which he also shed light on his early interactions with new coach Michael Maguire.

“I’d be lying if I claimed I wasn’t anxious,” he confided.
“I’m genuinely thankful for the chance to continue with the Brisbane Broncos. I want to make amends for the second chance they’ve provided me.
“I hadn’t interacted much with Madge prior, but during my time away, we had a couple of conversations. It was mostly about him getting to know me and ensuring I stayed focused on how I was feeling.
“Madge was instrumental in the support network I had … the core message I received was to tackle any challenges that came my way.”
Mam is set to return for Brisbane’s clash with the Rabbitohs in round 10.
