Brisbane Roar has secured the services of Isuzu UTE A-League Championship-winning defender James McGarry from Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen.
The New Zealand international makes his return to the A-Leagues with a three-year contract in Brisbane, having spent the last two seasons with Aberdeen.
A winner of the Championship with Central Coast Mariners in 2023, the 27-year-old full-back also enjoyed a loan spell at Greek second-tier club Athens Kallithea in 2025.
McGarry is the second player to join Roar under new manager Milorad Stajic as the club’s rebuilding effort led by Michael Valkanis continues.

McGarry stated, “I’m thrilled to be joining Brisbane Roar and to represent the fans every week.”
“With my A-League experience, I’m sure I can make an immediate impact and perform at the standard that the club and the city expect.”
“I’m eager to achieve success with Brisbane Roar in 2025-26 and I’m ready to give everything I’ve got to make that a reality. I can’t wait to get started.”

McGarry proved to be a standout performer in Central Coast’s championship-winning season in 2023, netting three goals in 21 appearances, which led to his overseas move.
During his tenure at Aberdeen, he took part in 24 matches across all competitions.
Roar’s head coach Valkanis remarked, “James brings a wealth of experience and his ability to advance up and down the flanks from defence makes him a brilliant signing for the club.”
“Moreover, James understands what it takes to consistently win a Championship in this league, and his mindset will be an invaluable asset in our dressing room.”
