Brisbane Roar have announced the exit of Portuguese youth international Asumah Abubakar following a stunning yet brief tenure at the club.
The forward, originally from Ghana, arrived in Brisbane back in February, where he quickly made an impact by scoring four goals and providing two assists across 11 appearances.
After Abubakar’s arrival from Swiss Super League team Grasshopper Club Zurich, the Roar experienced their strongest stretch of the Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 season. They concluded the season with four victories and three draws in their final ten matches, successfully climbing out of the bottom position above Perth Glory and avoiding the dreaded wooden spoon.
Brisbane has stated that an “enhanced multi-year permanent deal” was offered to Abubakar to continue at the club, yet the 28-year-old opted against staying in Queensland for the forthcoming Isuzu UTE A-League 2025-26 season.
He becomes the seventh player to leave the club since the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, following Keegan Jelacic (end of loan), Florin Berenguer, Louis Zabala, Adam Zimarino, Corey Brown, and Rafael Struick.
As the club embarks on a new chapter under head coach Michael Valkanis, the newly appointed Roar manager has secured Bosnia youth international Milorad Stajic and New Zealand international James McGarry. Additionally, they have retained young Australian defender Hosine Bility, who has signed a two-year contract with the Roar after starting last season on loan from Portuguese side CD Mafra.
